A village suffered under a corrupt headman who conducted all his worst business at night — land transfers, bribery, threats — always after dark when there were no witnesses. The community lived in fear. One morning, a rooster that belonged to the poorest family in the village crowed at an unusual hour — not at dawn, but at midnight, directly outside the headman's house while he was conducting an illegal land transfer. The sound woke the entire village. They gathered and witnessed the transaction in progress. The headman tried to claim innocence, but the rooster crowed again — and again — each time the headman attempted to speak a lie. The village understood this was no ordinary bird. It continued for three nights. The headman fled. The rooster died on the fourth morning, having completed its purpose. The spirit of that rooster — or the divine energy that had animated it — became Kozhippulan.

The performance always begins before dawn and must conclude exactly as the sun rises. The performer wears a distinctive rooster-inspired headdress with red and gold elements. The ritual involves the deity crowing at specific moments — these crows are believed to expose hidden wrongs in the community.
