During a period of coastal raids, a group of women and children found themselves cut off from the main settlement with raiders approaching from both directions. They had gathered at a small hilltop shrine with nowhere to run. The eldest woman among them began a prayer to Durga — not the distant cosmic Durga but a local, immediate presence. As the raiders approached, witnesses from a distance reported that the hilltop appeared to glow with a golden light. The raiders reached the hill and... stopped. They circled it but could not approach further. Some later reported seeing walls that were not there. Others said they felt a heat that prevented them from climbing. After hours of circling, they left. The women and children descended unharmed. Where they had prayed, the ground showed scorch marks in the shape of a circle — as if a golden fence of fire had surrounded them. The shrine was rededicated to Kanaka Durga.
