He challenged the master to a demonstration duel in front of the assembled students. The code required that all combat begin at the signal of a specific drum beat. As the master performed the opening salutation — a moment of complete vulnerability — the jealous student struck. The master fell. As he lay dying, he did not look at his attacker. He looked at the students who had witnessed it and said nothing. His silence was the most terrible thing in the room. He died. That night, every student who had been present had the same dream — the master standing in the Kalari, performing the salutation, and looking directly at them. The dream repeated for weeks. Three students eventually left the tradition in shame. The jealous student's hands became permanently unsteady, making him unable to practice the art. The master was installed as the protector of the Kalari institution.
