Kurathi Theyyam draws from the traditions of the Kurava and other nomadic tribal communities who historically served as fortune-tellers, herbalists, and carriers of news between isolated villages. Their marginal social position paradoxically gave them access to information that settled communities did not have.

A Kurathi woman arrived at a powerful landlord's estate during a festival and began telling fortunes. She told the landlord's wife that the family's wealth was built on a specific injustice — she named the family from whom the land had been stolen three generations prior. She told a priest that his son would abandon the priesthood. She told a merchant that his business partner was stealing from him. Every prediction was verifiable and true. The landlord ordered her driven from the village. She said: 'You can drive me out, but you cannot drive out what I have seen. Truth does not need a home — it walks.' She was found dead on the road the next morning. But for years afterward, a woman matching her description was seen at every village festival in the region, still telling fortunes, still speaking truths that no one wanted to hear.
